The gateway of any castle was its most vulnerable point, and had to be defended accordingly. At Raglan, we have already noticed the gunloops, the machicolations, and the ditch which could only be crossed by the drawbridge, while the gate would have been further protected by marksmen positioned on the Great Tower.
